- Damage found at haul-out with the splashedown slip already booked
- Charter departure deadline with a known structural repair outstanding
- Mid-season repair window between charters the owner can't extend
- Hardware replacement required to pass survey before the next leg
Typical shop response time: 3–5 working days. The shop sequences the repair alongside scheduled work, sources any non-stocked material, and commits a completion date up front. This is the most common rush request and the most predictable to deliver against.
Tier 3 — Haul-Out Window (1–2 Weeks)
The vessel is on the hard and the splashedown slip is a fixed date. The work is not yet defined in detail because the surveyor or diver is still finding things. Examples:
- Late-season haul-out discovered damage at survey
- Insurance-driven scope of work with a hard lay-up date
- Yard-scheduled structural refit with a closing window
Typical shop response time: 5–14 working days. The work is real but the urgency is scheduling, not emergency. A two-week runway gives the shop room to source material, write a WPS if needed, and slot the work into the queue without breaking another customer's timeline.
Lead Times the Shop Can Hit
Lead times in marine fabrication depend on three variables: material availability, certification requirement, and the work's position in the queue. The shop's published "rush" rates only hold when material is in stock and the work does not require fresh classification society approval. - A weld repair on a clean joint with no classification oversight
- A bracket or hardware fab from existing drawings
- Anything machining-only on stocked round bar
Not a rush job — schedule it:
- A full new T-top from concept
- A full hull plate replacement
- A structural repair requiring fresh WPS qualification
- Anything where the design is still being finalized
A shop that quotes a full new T-top in five days is either cutting corners on documentation or planning to fail the deadline. Neither helps the captain. The right move on a non-rush job is to schedule it on the shop's normal queue and plan around that timeline.

- The deadline driver — "charter departure Friday at 0600, surveyor failed the boat yesterday, slip is paid through Sunday"
- The classification status — "private vessel, no class, USCG documented for charter under 46 CFR Subchapter T"
With those three pieces of information the shop can either commit a lead time immediately or tell the captain within two hours that the job isn't rush-able and what the realistic queue position is. The captain who calls with a clear problem, a clear deadline, and a clear classification status gets the fastest and most accurate answer.
What doesn't help: a long narrative about how the part failed, a list of every other project the shop might also be invited to quote, or uncertainty about whether the part is even the right part.
